How Brass Fittings Can Cut Down Utility Bills

Utility bills have, over time, become exceedingly expensive. Because of this, people are constantly on the lookout for any way to save money on either energy or water usage. Unfortunately, what many of them don’t realize is how much unnecessary water they may be losing from faulty pipes.

Currently, the average residence loses approximately 22 gallons of water each day from leakage, sometimes amounting up to 10,000 gallons a year — enough to wash 270 loads of laundry. This wasted water can amass to huge costs over time. The reason it is so easy for a structure to contain leaks is the massive networks of pipes that water must flow through. Between horizontal channels, and the pressure needed to divert liquid to multiple floors, there is plenty of room for error.

More often than not, these leaks can be the result of defective valves and fittings. Some may not connect properly, and some may be constructed with inferior materials, but reliable brass fittings can improve these connections.

To further improve the functionality of pipe connections, brass fittings can be coupled with compression fittings to create an extremely tight seal. What makes brass such a reliable component over other materials, is the mixture used to create it. Brass is a combination of 67% copper, and 33% zinc; two metals reasonably strong on their own, but together create a solid and sturdy material.

One of the most difficult aspects of reducing water usage, is the fact that any leaks or cracks are usually not easily visible. Most pipes travel throughout walls and floors, purposely keeping them out of sight and away from harm. However, sometimes leaks can go unnoticed until they cause serious problems such as water or electric damage. A good rule of thumb for determining whether a residence may have severe problems with their pipes, is that a family of four is exceeding 12,000 gallons of water usage in a month.

Instead of preventing damage and saving money on utility bills, using strong and reliable brass fittings and pipes can make a world of difference.
